It’s a special form of green tea

Whereas in matcha, the actual leaves that are finely powdered are drunken. One teaspoon of matcha powder mixed with three cups of hot water makes a solution. They are heated to less than a boil and then whisked with a bamboo brush until it froths.

Matcha is covered with shade cloths before harvesting. This is non-similar preparation method of traditional green tea. This method activates the growth of leaves with better flavor and texture. The dried leaves are then stone-ground into a fine powder.

It offers health benefits

It is made from high-quality tea, the whole leaves are ingested. Hence it has more nutrients than the steeped green tea. It provides small amounts of vitamins and minerals. It is rich in antioxidants called polyphenols. They protect heart disease and cancer. Also, they regulate better blood sugar, reduces blood pressure, and anti-aging. The presence of EGCG boost metabolism, and slow or halt the growth of cancer cells.

It contains caffeine.

It is about the amount in a cup of brewed coffee. The caffeine present in coffee, when compared to matcha, creates an “alert calm”. This is due to the presence of I-theanine. It is a natural substance that induces relaxation without drowsiness.

It traditionally involves meditation 

Matcha is more focused in the Japanese tea ceremonies. It is closely related to Zen over many years. It has become more popular because of its meditation involvement. Meditation is becoming famous and one of the mainstream.

Preparation and sipping matcha slow down due to the presence of antioxidants. The meditation, in any form, has a myriad of rewards. It reduces cortisol, a stress hormone known to drive appetite and increase belly fat. It curbs impulsive eating, lower blood pressure, and boost self-esteem and compassion.

 The powders may be sweetened, and the quality varies 

It has a very strong taste. It tastes like a grass or spinach, and an umami taste. It can also be sweetened to improve its palatability. Lead contamination is a concern

Though green teas have been grown organically, it contains lead. The tea is grown in huge in China. Traditional green tea steeped has 90% of the lead presence in the leaf. It is discarded. But in matcha, when the whole leaf is consumed, more lead is ingested. It is estimated that one cup of matcha contains 30 times more lead than a cup of green tea. So, only one cup of matcha is recommended daily and it is not advised to serve children.
